MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) is reputed to be the largest museum in the country and maybe the world for contemporary art. It is housed in a series of old industrial buildings in North Adams, Massachusetts. Some of the art is immense in size. Yesterday I decided to walk in a different direction than normal. I saw a sign saying it was the office for performance art but the door was locked. Further down the corridor however a door open. Inside was a large room and a long table with a large collection of electrical machines that make sound/music. It was set up for an educational program for high school students. But the man who made and/or owned these instruments wanted to demonstrate them for me. When he found I was a conductor (of opera) he became even more friendly. The sounds I heard were fantastic. The photo shows ‘Bill’ leaning over adjusting an instrument on the floor. He demonstrated one machine that recorded what he played and then could play it back at half speed or backwards. You should try it.
