As I continue my research for A Ramble through Small-Town New England I’m meeting more fascinating people. Yesterday I drove to Florida, Massachusetts, the highest and perhaps coldest town in Massachusetts, to meet Stanley Brown. Stan was 84 and had lived in Florida his whole life earning his living fixing cars at Brown’s garage. He was also a carpenter and a farmer.
When he met me at his door he was wearing his star studded hat. That, along with his goatee made me think of photos of Uncle Sam. I have two photos of him that might be of interest. The first shows him in the patriotic hat; the second in the leather skull cap used when he was fixing cars. Stan was a fascinating man and we had a wonderful afternoon talking about his life and about Florida.
These are in my Vermont Stories collection
